Broccoli Sambar Recipe

Broccoli Sambar is the easiest way to incorporate this healthy vegetable in our meals.Broccoli contains high levels of vitamin c and fiber.It is loaded with essential nutrients.Broccoli tastes the same as cauliflowers when used in sambar.So do try this healthy sambar at home,the best way to make your kids have Broccoli is to make this Broccoli Sambar.

INGREDIENTS 

1/2 cup toor dhal

8 broccoli florets

1 carrot(chopped)

3 small tomatoes(chopped)

10 small onions(chopped)

1 green chilly slit

1 tbsp tamarind juice

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1 -2 tsp chilli powder

1 tsp sambar powder

2 tbsp sesame oil

Coriander leaves for garnishing

Salt to taste

TO TEMPER

1/4 tsp mustard seeds

1/4 tsp urad dhal

1/4 tsp cumin seeds

1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds

Asafoetida a generous pinch

Few Curry leaves

PREPARATION TIME:20 MINS

COOKING TIME:30 MINS

SERVES:4

METHOD

Soak the toor dhall in water for half an hour and then pressure cook for 2 -3 whistles.
Heat oil in a kadai,add the items under ‘to temper’ column.

When they splutter add onions and saute till they become transparent.
Then add the broccoli florets,carrots,tomatoes,green chilly and saute for 5 mins on medium flame.
Cook the veggies until the tomatoes turn mushy.

Now add the sauted vegetables to the cooked dhal ,add turmeric power,chilli powder,sambar powder,water,salt and bring to boil.

When it starts to boil reduce to simmer flame,cook for 10 mins until the vegetables are cooked and oil starts to separate.
Now add the tamarind juice and stir to mix them well. Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.

Healthy Broccoli Sambar is ready to serve now.Serve with Idly,Dosai,Pongal or Steamed rice.

  1. I have to wonder, I do not recall broccoli being part of the traditional Indian diet. Cauliflowers in many things, but I can’t think of anything with broccoli. Is this your original recipe? Are there other examples of broccoli in Indian foods?

    1. In India we use more of cauliflowers,but nowadays there are lot of Indian recipes made with Broccoli.Broccoli sambar is my own recipe which made me easy to include them in our diet.We make Broccoli stuffed chapathi,Broccoli stir fry,Broccoli sabji and many more….
