Makkan Peda is a famous sweet of Arcot,a small town of Vellore city (Tamilnadu).Arcot is a place where one can see numerous sweet stalls and The Chettiyar sweet stall is the most famous and oldest of all.Makkan Peda is being prepared here for generations.It was introduced to the people of Arcot by the Arcot Nawabs.
Makkan Peda is a richer version of Gulab Jamun where some nuts,raisins are chopped and stuffed inside the dough and then deep fried in ghee.They are flattened balls with juicy texture and stuffed nuts.The stuffings makes the sweet special.

3 & 1/2 cups sugar
2 & 1/2 cups water

This would make stuffing for 10 Makkan Peda ,you can make Gulab Jamuns with rest of the dough.If you need more Makkan Pedas prepare more chopped nuts.

PREPARATION OF SUGAR SYRUP
Boil sugar,water and cardamoms in a wide,flat pan for 10-15 mins on medium flame until the sugar syrup thickens.Do not let the sugar syrup to attain one string consistency which is not the desired consistency for Gulab Jamuns or Makkan Pedas.
Prepare he dough and keep it aside for 15 mins.Chop the nuts finely,you can also use raisins here.
Roll out the dough to lemon sized balls,add a tsp of chopped nuts as stuffings.Gather the ends of the dough and close it as shown in the pic below.Seal them without any cracks.Press them gently to flatten the balls
Heat oil in a kadai,add the flattened balls.Deep fry them in ghee for few mins on low flame untill they turn golden brown.Remove from ghee and add them directly to the warm sugar syrup.Let the Makkan Pedas be soaked in the sugar syrup for 30 mins.
Makkan Peda is ready to serve now.Serve them warm or chilled.

TAKE CARE TIPS
Fry the Makkan Pedas on low flame,do not get tempted to increase the flame.
Let the sugar syrup be warm and not hot.
Seal the dough well before frying,otherwise the stuffing would come out.
