Ellu Mittai / Sesame Burfi a crunchy, nutty, sweet made with sesame seeds and jaggery. These burfis are so nutritious with the goodness of two healthy ingredients Sesame seeds and Jaggery(natural sugar substitute).Ellu means Sesame seeds in Tamil, but we dont call the Sesame oil as Ellu(sesame) Yennai(oil) instead we say Nalla yennai which means Good oil.Sesame seeds and the oil are rich with high nutritive values.
Sesame seeds are roasted, mixed with caramelized jaggery and then made to burfis.Sesame burfi is a part of our tradition to make them for festive seasons to bring goodness and happiness throughout the year. But I always buy them from stores for had no idea how it is being prepared. Now with the help of my dear friend Swati pareek, I know how easy these are to make at home.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup sesame seeds
3/4 cup jaggery
2 tsp ghee
1/4 cup water
PREPARATION TIME:10 MINS
COOKING TIME:15 MINS
YIELDS : 30-40 SMALL BURFIS
METHOD
Measure the sesame seeds and jaggery.Heat a pan,dry roast the sesame seeds on medium flame until they begin to crackle.Do not let them to smoke or burn.keep it aside and let it cool.
Crush the jaggery and keep it aside.Heat a tsp of ghee, water and add the jaggery.Let the jaggery boil on medium flame until the desired consistency is obtained.
Check the consistency by dropping a tsp of the jaggery syrup in a bowl of water. On cooling it should form a soft, non sticky ball. This is the perfect consistency to switch off the flame. Now add the roasted sesame seeds.
Give it a good stir to mix the sesame seeds with the jaggery evenly.Grease a plate with ghee and transfer the mixture.Spread them gently with a greased spatula.
Cut the burfis to desired shapes.
Store the Ellu Mittai / Sesame Burfi in an air tight container at room temperature.

I love Ellu Mithai in any shape as round balls or square chikki-type pieces. Your Mithai looks perfect, Swapna. The trick is in the consistency of the “pakam”. 🙂
