Poondu Chutney ,a fiery ,spicy bright coloured chutney made from garlic cloves,coconut and dried red chillies.If you are bored at making the regular coconut chutney at home,then do try this simple Garlic chutney.A must have accompaniment for Idly and Dosai.
INGREDIENTS
1/3 cup garlic cloves
1/3 cup grated coconut
5-7 dried red chillies
A small piece of tamarind
1 tbsp gingelly oil
Salt to taste
Water as required
TO TEMPER
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp urad dhal
PREPARATION TIME : 10 MINS
COOKING TIME: 10 MINS
SERVES: 2-4
METHOD:
Heat a tsp of oil in a pan,add tamarind,dried red chillies and garlic.Saute for 10 mins on low flame until the garlic turns mild yellow in colour.
Now add the grated coconut and just saute for a minute on low flame.
Remove from flame,cool the mixture,grind in a mixer with little salt and water.
Heat the remaining oil in a kadai,add mustard seeds and urad dhal .WHen they splutter add the ground chutney, mix well with the tempered items and remove from flame.
Serve the Poondu Chutney / Garlic Chutey with Idly or Dosai.
TAKE CARE TIPS
Do not burn the garlic while sauteing.
Saute the garlic until the raw pungent smell goes off.
You can add few curry leaves along with garlic.

Looks damn good Swapna, never tried this…I love garlic too. But does it give the garlicky smell? just curious as my husband doesn’t like the smell 😉 Otherwise I totally wanna give this a try…

Thanks Malar…Saute the garlic in oil for 10 -15 mins on low flame until they turn mild yellow in colour…You can also cook them for 5 mins on low flame after grinding the chutney….This helps to get rid of the pungent garlic smell….All garlic lovers must try this chutney…..
