Green peas are legumes that contains sugar and starch it,they are sweet to taste with vibrant green color.Peas are added and cooked along with other vegetables, panneer and mushrooms to make various delicious curries and gravies.Peas are also used to make many meat dishes.
I got this recipe from a Chef who cooks for most of the weddings in my native place Virudhunagar. After trying out this recipe at home,I have completely forgot my old peas poriyal recipe.
Sometimes I add them to the Dosa as a filling and serve it with sambar for my little fussy eater at home. You can serve these Patani poriyal with sambar or paruppu for your lunch.
INGREDIENTS
3/4 cup green peas
1 & 1/2 green chillies (chopped)
1 onion (chopped)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tbsp oil
Salt to taste
Water as required
TO GRIND
4 cloves of garlic
2 cloves
1 star anise
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
An inch of ginger
A small cinnamon stick
TO TEMPER
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dhal
PREPARATION TIME : 10 MINS
COOKING TIME : 10 MINS
SERVES : 3-4
METHOD
Grind the items under ‘to grind ‘column first without water and then grind the second round with 1/4 cup of water.
Remove the peas from its shell and keep it aside.Heat oil in a cooker, add the mustard seeds and urad dhal. When they splutter add the onions, green chillies and saute for 2 mins on medium flame.
Now add the ground mixture by filtering it through a strainer. Now add the peas, turmeric powder and salt.
Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles.Open the lid when the pressure is completely released. If there is more water then cook for few more minutes without the lid until the poriyal thickens.
Serve with Sambar or Paruppu with Steamed rice.
TAKE CARE TIPS
We need not add water for cooking the peas, the ground mixture itself will be enough to cook the peas.
We can also add few curry leaves for this poriyal.
Instead of green chillies a tsp of red chilli powder can be used.
this is my favorite . mouth watering ..
