Pattani Sundal or Peas Sundal is prepared using dried yellow peas .It is very popular snack sold in Chennai Marina beach.Marina beach is one of the most magnificent beaches in India,it is said to be the second longest beach in the world.It is the major hangout for both the local people and the tourists.
Various food stalls including ice creams,sundal,sugarcane juice,murukku are there to curb the cravings of the foodies.One should never miss the chance of having the Yellow peas sundal with shredded raw mango.
My post today is about this famous Beach Peas Sundal that every Chennaites love to have.Sundal is also prepared on auspicious occasions like Vinayar chathurthi,Vijaya dasami,Pongal,Krishna jayanthi and Navrathri as Neivedhyam.It is a traditional Indian recipe perfect for almost every occasions at home.
Sundal can be prepared with white chana dal,black channa dal,mung dal or with any legume of your choice.The addition of spices and tempering makes it more delicious and flavourful.Sundal is an healthy protein rich snack perfect for kids back from school.Make a bowl of Sundal and serve it with a glass of fresh fruit juice for your family members especially for your lovely little ones at home.
SOAKING TIME : 8 HOURS OR OVERNIGHT
PREPARATION TIME : 30 MINS
COOKING TIME : 5 MINS
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup dried yellow peas
2 tbsp grated coconut
1/2 -1 green chilly
An inch ginger
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
1/2 cup shredded raw mango
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp mustard seed
A pinch of hing / asafoetida
A sprig of curry leaves
Water as required
Salt to taste
METHOD
Soak the peas for minimum 8 hours or overnight and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
Grind coconut,fennel seeds and ginger with 2 tbsp water.Heat oil in a pan,add the mustard seeds,curry leaves,hing and saute for a min in medium flame.Now add the ground mixture and saute for 3-5 mins in low flame or until it thickens.
Finally add the cooked peas and mix well.
Beach Pattani Sundal is ready to serve.Garnish with shredded raw mango before serving.
TAKE CARE TIPS
You can also add 2 tbsp of chopped coriander leaves for garnishing.
Don’t worry if you forgot to soak the dried peas,you can always soak them in hot water in a casserole or thermo flask for an hour or two and use it to make sundal.
