Just a month more for Vinayagar Chathurthi,an auspicious hindu festival celebrated all over India.It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha who is the god of wisdom,prosperity and good fortune.Vinayagar chathurthi festival is as colourful as Diwali .In preparation for the festival ,artisans create clay models of Lord Ganesha for sale and small colorful paper umbrellas are also made for Lord Ganesha.People decorate their homes with colorful flowers and Maathoranams.
The primary sweet dish prepared as Neivedhyam for Lord Ganesha is Kozhukatai (MODAK) made from rice flour or wheat flour with stuffing of grated coconut,jaggery,nuts and sugar.These kozhukatais are made using different ingredients and differs from region to region.I m sharing here a healthy version of a kozhukatai recipe with wheat flour and karupatti(palm sugar).Palm sugar is rich in vitamins ,minerals and amino acids.Replacing white sugar with palm sugar helps to postpone the onset of diabetes and reduce weight.Do try this healthy kozhukatai without any compromise in taste and enjoy the day with your family and friends.

1/2 cup wheat flour
1/4 cup +1 tbsp palm sugar syrup
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
Water as required
Take the palm sugar and break them into small pieces.
Boil the palm sugar in half a cup of water and simmer in lower flame for 5 mins to obtain thick palm sugar syrup.Then filter the syrup in stainless steel filter and discard the residue.
In a large mixing bowl add wheat flour and cardamom powder.
Add grated coconut and palm jaggery syrup and make a soft smooth dough.Let the dough rest for 10 mins.
Take a gooseberry sized dough and press them gently between your palm and fingers to give slight impression.
Steam the kozhukattais in an idly cooker for 20 -25 mins .
Wheat palm sugar kozhukatais are ready now.

Alter the amount of palm sugar according to your desired sweetness.
Prepare the dough with hot palm sugar syrup to yield soft kozhukatais.
The dough should also be soft for hard dough yields hard ,rubbery,cracked kozhukatais.
