Ashoka Halwa Recipe

Just a month more for Diwali and we are excited and busy already.And its time to try new sweet recipes at home ,so that we become experts while making it for Diwali.I really wanted to post a traditional tamil sweet recipe to start my Diwali sweet series.
Today I’d like to share an easy,simple halwa recipe using moong dal known as Ashoka Halwa which is a famous sweet recipe from Thiruvaiyaru.And it is popularly known as Thirvaiyaru Ashoka Halwa.
A glossy ,bright colored halwa that is so rich with lot of ghee,sugar and some nuts.So kindly shut down those apps that keep tracking your calories and have a food filled Diwali with your lovely family and friends.

PREPARATION TIME : 10 MINS

SOAKING TIME : 20 MINS

PREPARATION TIME : 30-40 MINS

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup moong dal

1 1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup ghee + 2 tbsp ghee

1 tbsp wheat flour

10 cashews (broken to pieces)

2 cups water

A pinch of food color

METHOD

Soak moong dal in water for 20 mins and pressure cook with 2 cups water for 3 whistles.Then pulse it in your mixie to creamy consitency.

Transfer the moong dal mixture to a large bowl and cook in low flame for 5 mins.

Heat 2 tbsp ghee and roast the cashews.Remove the cashews and keep it aside.Add sugar to the moong dal mixture.

In the same cashew roasted ghee ,roast the wheat flour for 1 min in low flame and keep it separately.

Cook the moong dal and sugar mixture for 10 mins in low flame and keep adding ghee at regular intervals.Stir them so that they don’t get burnt.Add the food colour and mix well.

Add cardamom powder,wheat flour paste and keep cooking in low flame for another 5 mins.

Finally add the roasted nuts and switch off the flame.

Delicious Ashoka Halwa ready to serve now.

TAKE CARE TIPS

Stir the halwa at regular intervals to avoid burning.

Switch off the flame when the halwa reaches dosa batter consistency.
