Paruppu Kulambu

Paruppu kulambu is almost the same as Dal tadka which is a very popular North Indian cusine.Paruppu kulambu is prepared using lentils and the method differs from region to region with variety of ingredients.
Paruppu Kulambu is a traditional recipe of my native place Virudhunagar and are specially prepared on Mondays to compensate the heavy non-veg meal that is prepared on Sunday.Dal is the only food that could be given for babies and old aged people.It can also be served for all 3 meals of a day.Paruppu kulambu can be prepared with any veggies of your choice,we usually prefer chow chow,drumstick,brinjal or bottle gourd.A flavor rich dal recipe that goes well with hot steamed rice and ghee.

PREPARATION TIME : 5 MINS

COOKING TIME : 25 MINS

SERVES : 3-4

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup toor dal / tuvaram paruppu

8 shallots (chopped)

1 tomato (chopped)

4-5 small drumstick pieces

3 cloves garlic

1 green chilly

A sprig of curry leaves

1 tbsp coriander leaves (chopped)

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp cumin powder

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp urad dal

2 tbsp sesame oil

Salt to taste

Water as required

METHOD

Soak the dal in water for half an hour and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles.Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds,urad dal,cumin seeds,curry leaves and let it splutter.Then add shallots,green chilly and saute for 2 mins in low flame.

Now add the drumstick and saute for a min ,then add tomatoes and saute for a 3 mins in low flame.Add the sauteed veggies to the cooked dal.

Add cumin powder,salt and bring it to boil.When it boils simmer the flame to low and cook for 12-15 mins.Switch off the flame and add chopped coriander leaves.

Creamy Paruppu Kulambu is ready to serve now.
