Ellu Kozhukatai / Sesame Seeds Modak – Vinayagar Chathurthi Recipes

Vinayagar Chathurthi is an auspicious hindu festival celebrated all over India.It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha who is the god of wisdom,prosperity and good fortune.Artisans create clay models of Lord Ganesha for sale and small colorful paper umbrellas are also made for Lord Ganesha.People decorate their homes with colorful flowers and Maathoranams.
The primary sweet dish prepared as Neivedhyam for Lord Ganesha is Kozhukatai (MODAK) made from rice flour or wheat flour with stuffing of grated coconut,jaggery,nuts and sugar.These kozhukatais are made using different ingredients and differs from region to region.
Ellu kozhukatai is stuffed sweet kozhukatai with grated coconut ,sesame seeds and jaggery as filling.Unlike ,Pidi kozhukatais these Pooranam kozhukatais takes time in shaping them.A very simple filling that doesn’t require any cooking.Make sure you make a thin outer covering with the dough with good amount of the filling inside to enjoy the sweetness in every bite.Do try this healthy kozhukatai without any compromise in taste and enjoy the day with your family and friends.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup Idiyappam flour

1/2 cup jaggery

1/2 cup sesame seeds

1/4 cup coconut

1/2 tsp cardamom powder

Pinch of salt (optional)

METHOD

Add sesame seeds,coconut,cardamom powder and jaggery to your mixer and just pulse for 5 secs.

To make the dough, add rice flour, salt, hot water in a wide vessel and make a soft dough and let the dough rest for few mins.

Make equal sized balls,take one portion and press gently to shape into a small cup with your palm and fingers.Add the filling,seal the kozhukatai and shape into modaks.

Steam them in an idly cooker for 10-12 mins.

Delicious Ellu Kozhukatai is ready for Neivedhyam now.
